Hwarang: The Begining
Peace be upon everyone. Well, this is my very first entry in 2017. I felt bad for not being able to write my own korean drama year end review as I usually did in the past few years but looking back in 2016 I watched only few dramas due to my so called hectic schedule. For me, 2016 wasn’t really a terrible year in the context of drama, as well as my real own life out here. Hopefully this year will be a better one with many happiness and blessing to come about.
Where should I begin? It has been quite sometime I since I brag about how good a korean drama is. Today I just want to write about the currently airing drama called Hwarang: The Begining. I was invested with this drama before it even aired just because of Park Seojoon and Park Hyunsik. I love them, well since Park Seojoon’s Kill Me Heal Me days and Park Hyung-sik that totally mesmerized me in Sirius and Nine. And with the adorable Go Ara ( Answer Me 1994) and a lot of pretty boys in the drama how can I resist the temptation? I’m a very happy to finally watch this drama and I’m glad that so far this drama hits every notes on me.
Hwarang was set in Silla dynasty which I know nothing about it. Usually korean drama oftenly set in Joseon or Goryeo but Silla is quite new term to me. It’s okay, since this drama did not dwell in the historic figure or events that happen during that time, let’s just cut that history part which I know nothing about. All the events in this drama are fictions- well for drama purpose.
The drama revolves around Hwarang - for which I personally define as a novel institution founded by the Queen for young, smart and pretty man in Silla to later serve the Palace( aka The Queen). Among those members of Hwarang, one of them is the King. Well, I don’t think I’ll be recapping this drama and I didnt even know how to do it well. Hence I’ll just share what I think makes this drama stands out.
Point No 1 - Lee Kwangsoo’s priceless guest appearance
What hit me so much was Lee Kwangsoo’s cameo appearance as Moo-myung’s ( played by Park Seojoon) best friend. His chemistry and acting was palpable and I was upset that he died early in this drama. Well, it has to because his death will be the reason for Moo-myung’s revenge later on. His death was not simply made, it has become the driving force for this drama to propel and create heart-wrenching relationship for Moo myung. Moo myung later takes the identity of Sunwoo ( Lee Kwangsoo’s real name in the drama) and become Ah ro’s ( Go Ara) big brother as well as entered Hwarang to seek justice for Moo myung’s death. We’ll see how it goes.
Point No 2 - Brother-sister relationship
Park Seojoon’s role in Hwarang kind of remind me of his role in Kill Me Heal Me. How can the drama make them as siblings? Ottoke? How awkward it will be if later they fall for each other? How Sun-woo’s going to hide his feeling? How can Ah Ro falls for his chinca orabeoni?? Ottoke, Writernim, please dont dissapoint me. I liked the awkward sibling relationship between them that it felt so real to me. I wish sooner or later Ah ro will found out that Sunwoo is not her real brother and it will be more appropriate for them to fall for one another.
Point No 3 - Bromance is in the air
I still remember how Jisung and Park Seojoon won the best couple award for Kill Me Heal Me and outshined Hwang Jungeum as the main lady. Well, I guess it’s going to happen again in Hwarang. Their brotherhood is just about to start and I’m willing for this ship to sail further. Okay..let’s just wait.
Point No 4 - Moo myung’s real identity
His identity was mysterious since the very beginning. He was left by his mother without name and identity in a small village, living quietly over there. I wonder whose son he actually is. At first, his persona in first few episodes reminds me of Jung Ilwoo in The Return of Iljimae especially with the sedge hat. I hope there’s more to his identity and I hope to unravel it later. Please show, don’t dissapoint me. It wont be called a korean drama if there’s no birth secret in it. Korean drama equals to birth secret. Full stop.
Point No 5 - The Long Wait
I’ve only watched 5 episodes and yet I’ve written so much about it. There’s still a long way to go and it’ll be on my radar afterall. Hopefully it’ll continue to amaze me in any ways. Just please don't jinx it.
Okay, no point anymore and I guess I should stop right here. Watching Hwarang along with the currently airing Goblin and Legends of the Blue Sea give me so called a mental breakdown but I’m happy to be able to enjoy korean drama again. People say, love will bring us back together and I guess that’s how my relationship with korean drama works. Till then, hope it’s not too late to wish a happy new year. Wishing a shining year with many happiness, blessing and love for everyone. Till then, anyeong.
