Cruel City : Heartless and Bloody

“The world is like a mirror. If you spit and curse at it, the world will curse and spit back at you. If you laugh, I’m sure the world will follow and laugh with you, too.”
- Shi-hyun
Peace be upon you.

I don’t know why my preference is getting weirder day by day. Currently I’m glued to Heartless City aka Cruel City which aired its 4th episode already. Huh, and it was an obviously mind-blowing ride. It’s epic and dark, bloodier and a lot of bad guys. If you haven’t watched it yet, please don’t read this unless you want to be spoiled. Though sometimes spoiler is essential, to let others be intrigued about this drama. Never mind then, the choice is up to you.

It’s a noir. And in noir, we skipped the melodramatic thingy and we gotta see a stylish crime - action thingy. And it turned out that one of the bad guys was actually an undercover cop? Huh, that was the most jaw-dropping moment as I watched Heartless City. It was done in stylish manner, with Infernal Affair-esque in it. For me, it’s a quite fast-paced since there are A LOT of characters in it to be introduced– plus with really funny names such as Safari, Tooth, Halibut, Meth Kim, Pusan, Scale and last but not least, Doctor's Son. Those druggies name is surely very funny to begin with. And maybe that’s the only humour I could see in Heartless City.

Well, it’s so unrealistic that in kdramaland, the guys – especially the main lead will have a speedy recovery after being stabbed – you can suture the wound by yourself, plus some alcohol and heat then a few minutes later you can still kick-ass. Huh, what a speedy recovery as if you’re superman. I guess, if it’s real, he’ll be very anemic and the pain is totally unbearable.

"It’s ether you kill or you get killed. I’m sick with the life that only gives. Those streets, let’s swallow them all."
- Shi-hyun

The cop, Hyung-min and the baddies are smart. I’m glad they are smart enough to pull the tricks on each other. I wonder how the game will change when Soo-min comes into the plot train. Soo-min, Hyung-min and Shi-hyun are basically on the same side, but have to fight each other. Huh, that surely will be an amazing ride to get those secrets unravelled. I’m also curious on how Soo-min ahd Shi-hyun will fall for each other later. And like seriously, I don't know who to trust in this drama. The higher-ups seemed to be corrupted and they're scarier than those small fishes.
“I’m sorry…that now I have to fight with the one you loved.”
– Shi-hyun

Seeing Ji Hyung-min lures Soo-min to become an undercover agent is somewhat really crazy. I’m aware that he was not in right mind after his wifey-to-be died tragically. I felt bad for him. But I felt bad for Soo-min too. She too, wasn’t in the right mind to make a good decision and Hyung-min uses it to make Soo-min accepts his offer. But I’m glad that later we can see more interactions between Shi-hyun aka Doctor's Son and Soo-min rather than just coincidental meeting at convenience store. I want to see more of them.

49 Days' Ji-hyun aslo did this too, when she's nervous

I guess Soo-min will be very smart. Unlike Kyung-mi I think she was made from tougher material and able to use her brain more, rather than following orders by Hyung-min. I don’t know, I think her inside is quite rebellious and definitely she’ll do some crazy stuff later. Will she really embrace the femme fatale? Let’s see.

Yoon Soo-min
Lee Jin-sook

There are a lot of characters that I like. One of them is Lee Jin-sook. At first I wondered how she is related to Shi-hyun. Heh, she’s the auntie but I love to see how Shi-hyun respects her. No wonder, she has interesting past too. She’s related to Safari, and to a shocking extend had some past with Director Min too. This is going to be interesting later.
Hyun Soo
Other than that, this guy named Hyun Soo is another character that I like. Bromance is in the air! I extremely wanting to know to what extend their relationship would be. Shi-hyun rushed to save him even after injured from the car accident and what would you say about that? It’s best friend rule. Amazing isn’t it. And that’s what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah? (singing the song, Count on Me by Bruno Mars)

And yeah I guess Director Min knows that Doctor Son is Shi-hyun since he clearly said that;

“We’re still investigating. And you’re the prime suspect!”

And he even asked Hyun-min how Yoon Soo-min looked alike. I guess he has the same worries as I do, worrying that both of them will fight each other not knowing that they’re actually on the same side. This is going to be messy. A real complete mess awaits me along the journey called Heartless City. It convinced me to keep on watching this drama with shades of grey in most characters. None is black and white. Guess what, it came from the same director who did tvN's I Need Romance ( both season) and though I don't really invested in I Need Romance, I guess this director can pull of something different that can challenge viewer expectation. For Heartless City, I like the writing and the flow of the story. Hurmm....

And let’s listen to the song of the day. It’s the drama’s OST – a good one!

Lastly, I guess this drawing might become something important later in revealing some secrets. I guess so. Till then, anyeong!

I agree, I love how all the druggies have crazy names. My favorite has to be "Wooden Stick".
