Live Up to Your Name, Dr Heo
Peace be upon everyone. Indeed, after a very long hiatus I decided to share about korean drama, again. Well, I’ve been through a lot of ups and downs this few years and somehow blogging reminds me of my old self. Yes, my old self of being addicted to korean drama and reflects or rambles about it.
Live Up to Your Name officially ended few days ago and I think I should write something about it because of so many reasons. Firstly, it’s atime travel drama - and I used to love time-travel plotline so much since Queen In-Hyeon’s Man, Nine or even the Rooftop Prince few years ago. This show reminds me of Queen In Hyeon’s Man the most as the time gap almost similar and the main lead able to travel back and forth. Secondly, it’s a medical drama and I loved how korean drama always execute it in a correct, stylish way. And not to forget how Kim Nam-gil extraordinary nailed the main character perfectly.
Live Up to Your Name is a fantasy-romantic-medical drama revolves about Heo Im ( played by Kim Nam-gil), a historic figure who was an excellent acupuncturist in Joseon era with extraordinary skills and talent. One day, he was able to travel to modern world after being shot by an arrow and fell into a river. Meanwhile in the modern wold, he met Choi Yeon-kyung, an anticipated cardiothoracic surgeon which later he develop love interest on.
Why do I love this drama? Well, usually in time travel drama the mechanism of time-travel is really important and somehow be questioned a lot. In Live Up to Your Name, the acupuncture case that was in his possession brought him back and forth whenever his life in danger ( ie near death situation). Honestly, this mechanism really reminded me of Queen In-Hyeon’s Man where the talisman brought Kim Boong-do to the modern wold in a similar fashion. Yes, I can’t get over Queen In-Hyeon’s Man that I had to mention it again and again.
Most importantly, this drama is about finding your own true self. I love how this lesson being portrayed in a very calming and subtle manner. This drama explored inner conflict of main character about being a doctor and to treat anyone without being prejudice about the patient. Doctors saves life, and it’s up to the patient to do harm or good after surviving- that was the belief that Choi Yeon-kyung had planted in Heo Im and made him a better man.
Although he can choose not to go back to Joseon era during the war time, but he was able to remain strong and think about his people that need his expertise the most, in a troubled time where there is no enough doctors during that time. He made a very right decision despite having to let go his love. And I salute Choi Yeon-kyung for being able to understand his decision despite knowing it will be really hard for both of them. In conclusion, Live Up to Your Name was a beautiful warm and fun ride.
Well, I think its enough to ramble about this drama and we need to move on,living our life - up to our name. Till then, hopefully I can write this long again in the near future. Goodbye.
